The Quarry at Giants Ridge

Jeffrey D. Brauer, ASGCA designed The Quarry: 18 holes, 7,201 yards, a slope of 139, and Golf Digest lists the facility type as Public. Golf Digest's Best in State list ranked the course fourth from 2011 through 2022 and has ranked it sixth since 2023, matching its current 2025-'26 position. The same publication ranks it #58 on its 2025-'26 America's 100 Greatest Public Courses list; its highest ranking there was 16th, in 2005-'06 and again in 2011-'12. Golf Digest's own description: "It doesn't get the press that courses such as Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Whistling Straits or Arcadia Bluffs, but The Quarry at Giants Ridge plays very links-like with its collection of fairway speed slots, greenside backboards and backstops and reverse-camber greens. It's very inventive design also demands some aerial play, too. A standout is its 13th, a drivable par-4 that's nearly as wide as it is long, with three alternate routes to a 100-yard-wide green. We named it the best 13th hole in America built since 2000."

Playing it

Tee times at The Quarry are booked by telephone only, at (218) 865-8030; the operator's own "Book Tee Times" buttons on its website dial that number rather than opening an online tee sheet, and the same is true of the "Tee Times" links elsewhere on the site. The operator's rate table, current as of a September 5, 2026 reading of its own site, runs in four seasonal bands for 2026: Early Season, from an opening date the operator lists only as "TBD" through May 28, at $100 weekend and weekday; Prime Season, May 29 through August 23, at $130; Fall Season, August 24 through September 27, at $130; and Late Season, September 28 through October 11, 2026, at $100 — the last date the operator prices golf in 2026. A same-day replay costs $75 in the Early, Fall and Late bands. Twilight play is $100 after 3 p.m. in Prime Season and after 2 p.m. in Fall Season. Junior golfers, age 17 and under and accompanied by an adult, pay $45 in every band. A military rate is offered; the operator requires photo ID to receive it and does not publish its price. All rates include a golf car and range balls, per the operator's own footnote. Cancellations require at least 48 hours' advance notice. No membership is required to play, and Golf Digest independently labels the facility "Public."

Day two: The Legend at Giants Ridge

The Legend at Giants Ridge is Golf Digest's 22nd-ranked course on the same Minnesota list, also labelled "Public," in Biwabik. Golf Digest's own entry credits it to "Texas-based architect Jeff Brauer" — the same architect as The Quarry. The operator states The Legend opened in 1997. The Legend shares The Quarry's 2026 rate table and its phone-only booking rule: "Please call 218-865-8030 for tee times."

Around Giants Ridge

On-site lodging at Giants Ridge includes The Lodge, The Villas and Greengate Guesthouse, named in the resort's own site navigation under Lodging. On-site dining includes Burnt Onion Kitchen & Brews and the Wacootah Grille; the Wacootah Grille sits at The Quarry's clubhouse and overlooks the 18th green. Bunkers Snack Bar sits at the turn between the first and ninth holes of The Legend, and the operator states it opens at 6 a.m. daily through the golf season. What these sources establish is that these places exist, what they serve or offer, and — for the Wacootah Grille and Bunkers — where on the property they sit; none of them says whether any given venue is trading this week, so this guide does not say so either.
