Pacific Dunes: Golf in Bandon, Oregon

The resort's own directions page states that "Bandon Dunes is just west of Highway 101" — U.S. Route 101, the coastal highway through Bandon. Driving distances to Bandon, by road: Eugene 132 miles, northeast; Medford 160 miles, southeast, by way of I-5; Portland 236 miles, northeast, by way of I-5. Nearer towns: Coos Bay is 24 miles northeast on US-101, and Coquille is 18 miles northeast on OR 42S. Flying, the resort names Southwest Oregon Regional Airport in North Bend (OTH) as the commercial option, with service from Denver (DEN) and San Francisco (SFO) on United Express, and places it "just 25 miles north of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort." Private aircraft can also use Bandon State Airport (S05), which the resort lists alongside OTH.

The resort's 2026 & 2027 lodging rate sheet names six properties: The Lodge, Lily Pond, Chrome Lake, The Inn, Round Lake and Grove Cottages. The Grove Cottages line — four bedrooms, four baths, four king beds — is priced by month for 2026, from $1,300 in January and December to $2,300 from June through September. Ten dining rooms appear in the resort's own site navigation: The Gallery & Puffin Bar, Ghost Tree Grill, Pacific Grill, McKee's Pub, Trails End, The Bunker Bar, The Library Lounge, Sheep Ranch Clubhouse, Shorty's Clubhouse and Charlotte's. What the sources establish is that these rooms exist and what they serve; none of them says whether any given room is serving this week, so this guide does not say so either. Off the property, the resort names one other place by name — The Inn at Face Rock, a Best Western property, (800) 638-3092 — though it does so in an answer about travelling with a non-service animal rather than as a general lodging recommendation. For a walk between rounds, the resort describes a conservation area on its own land: "The 2,525-acre resort has a minimal building footprint and an estimated 1,500 acres of unmanaged land," and within it "a conservation area called the H.L. McKee Preserve. The 250-acre conservation area has 13 different natural resource communities, one of which is Silvery Phacelia (Phacelia Argentea) designated as a threatened plant species by the State of Oregon and species of concern federally." Bandon Dunes Golf Resort states that five of its six courses are certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary through Audubon International. The resort does not name which five.

Tom Doak designed Pacific Dunes and it opened on July 1, 2001. The design firm that sculpted it was Doak's own Renaissance Design, Inc. Golf Digest's 2025-'26 Oregon list ranks it first, 4.9 from 66 panelists, labelled "Public"; the accompanying methodology page states that Golf Digest "has been publishing a Best in State ranking every other year since 1977, making this the 25th edition," judged by "our trained panel of more than 1,700 low-handicap golfers." Three USGA championships have been played on the course. The resort's USGA-events page lists the Curtis Cup Match of 2006 at Pacific Dunes and records that "Team USA wins the 34th Curtis Cup Match by a comfortable margin, with a score of 11.5 points to Great Britain and Ireland's 6.5 points." It lists the inaugural U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball, 2015, at Pacific Dunes. And it lists the 2019 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, played over Old Macdonald and Pacific Dunes. The 2025 U.S. Women's Amateur, sometimes attached to this course in passing, was held on the resort's original Bandon Dunes course, not on Pacific Dunes. The green-fee page states plainly of the resort's courses: "All courses are walking only."

Pacific Dunes is one of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort's daily-fee courses, and Golf Digest labels it "Public." You do not have to stay at the resort to play it: the resort publishes a day-guest green fee for every month of the year. Day guests booking inside 21 days pay the standard day-guest rate. To book more than 21 days ahead, a day guest must be playing between April and mid-November, pays the higher premium day-guest rate, takes a tee time after 10:00 a.m., and may book no more than one year out. Resort lodging guests book on a separate, earlier track at the lower resort-guest rate. The resort's rate page is headed "Green Fees" and dated by the resort itself — "2026 & 2027 Rates for Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails, Old Macdonald, and Sheep Ranch" — and the 2026 grid runs: Day Guest $180 in January and December, rising to $425 from June through September; Premium Day Guest $360 in April, $440 in May, $475 from June through September, $440 in October and $325 in November, with no premium rate published for January, February, March or December; Resort Guest $130 in January and December, rising to $375 from June through September. An Oregon Resident rate matching the Resort Guest schedule is published with its own condition: "The Oregonian rate is available only for tee times made within 21 days in advance." Replay rates are lower, and the page limits them: "Replay rates only apply to an individual's second round played the same day."

The second course to play is Bandon Trails, third on the same Golf Digest Oregon list and also labelled "Public." It is named on the same 2026 & 2027 green-fee sheet as Pacific Dunes, so the booking rule above applies to it in the same terms. The resort's own page describes it: "When Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw began working in the sand to uncover our third course, they faced the challenge of following Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes. Opened in 2005, Bandon Trails begins atop a massive sand dune, then quickly opens into a sprawling meadow."
