Otis Ridge: from a 1946 rope tow through foreclosure to a 2016 rescue
Otis, MA
Part of Skiing New England
Otis Ridge's own history page lists 1946 as its "1st Year of Operation," when "2 Portable Rope Tows in tandem ran up the hill where the T-Bar is now located." David ("Dave") and Hooker Judson "did the initial planning and developing of the Otis Ridge Ski Area when the primary mode of uphill transportation was rope tows," per that page; Dave "was a member of the famed 10th Mountain Division during World War II." The Judsons "were responsible for the inception of the Ski Camp" at Otis Ridge, though the page gives no specific founding year for the camp itself. Snowmaking was "introduced by way of an ice crusher," with ice farmed off local lakes, crushed, and blown across the slopes and trails, per the ski area's own history page, and a Poma lift was introduced that the page describes as "one of the earliest Poma lifts ever built." Otis Ridge's own site gives its address as 159 Monterey Road, Otis, MA 01253.

Per New England Ski History, Otis Ridge went through foreclosure in the winter of 1981-82, after which the ski area came under R.S.M. Management, Inc.; in May 1987, R.S.M. Management sold Otis Ridge to Otis Associates, Inc. for $470,000. Facing foreclosure again, Otis Associates transferred the ski area on December 31, 2016 to Otis Ridge Properties, LLC for $195,000. Separately, in 2008 an Otis Ridge manager, Al Hewett, was convicted of sexual abuse, after which part owner Jamie Carr took over as general manager.
