Albergo della Catena

The building went up between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries as an inn. It is named for a chain that barred the alley then called della Catena di Pescheria; the Sovrintendenza Capitolina explains the practice, in which chains marked out a property, or kept carts away from hospitals and hospices, or, at a noble palace, showed when taut that the owner was away. The Comune bought the building in 1929 for the widening of the via del Mare and it was slated for demolition. It was not demolished but restructured in 1929 to 1930, isolating the medieval part, and the alley itself disappeared in 1933.
