Altare della Patria and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
Historic site · Campitelli, Italy
VIVE describes the Altare della Patria as conceived by Giuseppe Sacconi as an integral part of the design of the Vittoriano, with a sculpted frieze by Angelo Zanelli. VIVE states that it received the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in 1921, to commemorate the dead of the First World War, and that a laurel wreath is still laid there at official ceremonies. The tomb has a guard of honour.
History
VIVE notes that very many people use the name Altare della Patria for the whole of the Vittoriano, which is worth knowing when you are reading signs or asking directions.
