Angel Stadium
Stadium · Anaheim, California
The home ballpark of the Los Angeles Angels, at 2000 Gene Autry Way in Anaheim, and the club's home since it opened on April 19, 1966. It is nicknamed "The Big A". The encyclopedia article's opening sentence reads "Angel Stadium (originally and colloquially known as Anaheim Stadium) is a ballpark in Anaheim, California", and the ballpark also housed the NFL's Los Angeles Rams from 1980 to 1994. On February 6, 2025 the Angels extended their lease to play there through 2032. Which of "Angel Stadium" and "Angel Stadium of Anaheim" is the more precise current form for formal use could not be established by this research; MLB.com's own channels use the shorter form throughout.
History
Ground was broken on August 31, 1964 and the ballpark opened on April 19, 1966, at an original construction cost of about $24 million. It was known as Anaheim Stadium from 1966 to 1997, then as Edison International Field of Anaheim from 1998 to 2003 under a naming-rights deal with the utility company; on December 29, 2003 the Angels announced that from then on the stadium would be known as Angel Stadium, in full Angel Stadium of Anaheim, the name it has carried since. A $118 million renovation between the 1997 and 1998 seasons returned the stadium to a baseball-only facility, removing football-era infrastructure and adding outfield bleachers and the "California Spectacular" — geysers and a stream cascading down an artificial rock mountainside with real trees, behind the left-center-field fence — completed in time for the 1998 season. The franchise was founded in 1961 as the Los Angeles Angels, renamed California Angels in 1965 ahead of the move to Anaheim, Anaheim Angels in 1997 following Disney's acquisition of the club, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2005 under owner Arte Moreno, retaining "of Anaheim" to satisfy the team's lease with the city, and reverted to Los Angeles Angels in 2016 while continuing to play at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.
