History
The house was designed and built between 1771 and 1778 for Lord Chancellor Henry, 1st Baron Apsley, later 2nd Earl Bathurst, by Robert Adam, at a cost of £10,000. Wellington became Prime Minister in January 1828 and commissioned further changes that year, including the new staircase and the Waterloo Gallery on the west front; Benjamin Dean Wyatt's final bill exceeded £64,000, and Wellington bought the freehold in January 1830 for £9,532. The collection includes work by Velazquez, Rubens, Goya, Titian and Bruegel. The Wellington Museum Act was signed in 1947 and Apsley House opened to the public in 1952, the centenary of the death of the 1st Duke of Wellington.
