Chiesa dell'Annunziatella

A small church on the vicolo that carries its name, between via Ardeatina and via di Grotta Perfetta. It has a single nave, a nineteenth-century wooden Crucifix, and a tripartite fresco in the apse conch with an Annunciation at the centre and a Madonna among the souls in purgatory and a Nativity at the sides.

History

An inscription inside the church, dated 12 August 1220 and issued by Honorius III, lists it among the Roman churches named for Maria Annunziata, which is where the popular diminutive comes from. For a short period Filippo Neri added it, together with San Paolo alle Tre Fontane, to the itinerary of the Seven Churches, which thereby became nine, and a hospice served the pilgrims who came. In 1640 Cardinal Francesco Barberini, protector of the Confraternita del Gonfalone to which the church was entrusted, reduced it to its present form, and the tradition of distributing food to the poor on 25 March began.
