Balmy Alley

Attraction · Mission District, California

A single block of alley between 24th Street and 25th Street at Garfield Square, painted along both sides. It is a street rather than a site, open at all hours and free.

History

The first paintings date from 1972, when Mia Galivez worked in the alley with children from a local childcare centre. In 1973 Patricia Rodriguez and Graciela Carrillo painted a jungle-and-underwater scene there, the beginning of Las Mujeres Muralistas. Ray Patlan led the PLACA project, which produced twenty-seven murals in the summer of 1985 with a 2,500 dollar grant from the Zellerbach Foundation. The alley was restored in 2014. Artists with work here include Juana Alicia, Susan Kelk Cervantes, Marta Ayala, Miranda Bergman, Xochitl Nevel-Guerrero, Sirron Norris and Irene Perez.
