History
New Hampshire State Parks describes Cannon Mountain as New Hampshire's only state-owned and operated ski area, located within Franconia Notch State Park and managed by the NH Division of Parks and Recreation, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, per the agency's own "About Us" page. Skiing on the mountain predates that designation: old logging roads were used for skiing starting in 1929, and the Richard Taft Race Course was developed in 1931-32, according to Wikipedia's "Cannon Mountain Ski Area" article. New Hampshire State Parks describes its own tramway as "the first passenger aerial tramway in North America," which began operation on the site in 1938. The original tramway, Tram I, carried "almost seven million passengers" before being replaced in 1980 by Tram II, nicknamed "Ketchup and Mustard" for its red and yellow cable cars, per NH State Parks' own tramway page. Tram II ascended 2,180 feet vertically to a summit elevation of 4,080 feet, provided an 8-minute ride, and operated for 45 years before being closed and retired as of October 26, 2025, according to the same source. As of that page, a third-generation tram is in the design phase -- Cannon Mountain partnered with SCJ Alliance on structural analysis, expected to be complete in December 2025 -- and New Hampshire State Parks says that once built, Cannon will be the only mountain in North America to operate a third-generation aerial tram, though as of now no replacement tram is operating. New Hampshire State Parks' own Cannon Mountain Ski Area page states that "US Olympic skier Bode Miller grew up skiing at Cannon."
