Casina Valadier
Historic site · Campo Marzio, Italy
The neoclassical pavilion on the Pincio, a cubic block with an exedra and an Ionic colonnade, built to Valadier's design between 1816 and 1837 on the ancient Collis Hortulorum. No source states its opening hours, so none are given here.
History
Roma Capitale records that the building reworked the earlier Casino del Cardinale Della Rota, itself raised over a Roman cistern, and that the interiors were decorated in Pompeian style. It was used from the start as a bistro-style meeting place; it was closed and used as a garden store under Pius IX, with the cruciform attic given over to military quarters; it became a fashionable café for intellectuals after the First World War; German and then British officers used it as an officers' club during the Second; and it was restored in the early 2000s.
