Fontana di via di San Gregorio

A fountain set into the retaining wall of the Antiquarium on the slope of the Caelian, framed by two massive brick propylaea. The vertical element is a marble saracinesca over which the water runs as a cascade into a rectangular serpentine basin with recesses on two sides, approached by three travertine steps between travertine corner posts; on the back wall are two marble tablets that originally carried fasces, later chiselled off, and S.P.Q.R. in relief capitals. The Sovrintendenza Capitolina records it under Rione Celio and gives the author as Antonio Muñoz, the date as 1933, and the materials as white marble, serpentine, travertine and peperino.
