Dartmouth Skiway

Dartmouth Skiway's own website lists its address as 39 Grafton Turnpike Road, Lyme Center, NH 03769, and its copyright notice attributes the site to the "Trustees of Dartmouth College." The Skiway's own "About" page describes the area as "Serving the Upper Valley since 1956." According to Wikipedia, the Skiway is "descended from an earlier, smaller operation on nearby Oak Hill in Hanover," and opened in 1957 with a Pomalift on one peak; the Dartmouth Outing Club article on Wikipedia states that "by 1956, the Dartmouth Skiway was built at Holt's Ledge, replacing Oak Hill as the primary downhill skiing facility for the college." The Dartmouth Outing Club itself, whose history is closely tied to the Skiway's origins, was established in 1909 by student Fred Harris to "stimulate interest in out-of-door winter sports," per Wikipedia. The Holts Ledge ski area, predecessor to today's Skiway, was formally dedicated on January 12, 1957, and its original base lodge, the Peter Brundage Lodge, was inaugurated on March 3, 1957, according to New England Ski History. For the 1960-61 season, a T-bar -- the Mueller T-Bar, per New England Ski History -- was added to serve a novice slope. In 1968, a new trail pod opened across the street on Winslow Ledge, served by a double chairlift, per Wikipedia. In the 1977-78 season, the Skiway's original Poma lift was replaced with a Hall double chairlift; in the 1985-86 season, a $1 million snowmaking system covering 43 acres was installed, per New England Ski History; and in the 1993-94 season the Winslow double chairlift was replaced with a Garaventa quad chairlift. Dartmouth Skiway's own website describes the McLane Family Lodge, completed in 2001, as "the centerpiece of the Skiway base area"; it won the 2002 Excellence in Architecture Award from the New Hampshire Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. In 2008, the Dupre family donated $750,000 to fund snowmaking improvements, per New England Ski History. Howard Chivers, a member of Dartmouth's class of 1939, served as the Skiway's first area manager; Donald Cutter, class of 1973, became manager in 1984.
