The Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art occupies Northampton Lodge on Canonbury Square, Grade II listed as 'NORTHAMPTON LODGE AND ATTACHED RAILINGS', NHLE 1298096, added to the list on 20 September 1954, and standing in the Canonbury Conservation Area. It opens Wednesday to Saturday 11.00 to 18.00 and Sunday 12.00 to 17.00, and closes Monday and Tuesday; on the final Thursday of each month it stays open until 21.00, with free entry for full-time students after 17.00. Admission is £9.50 adult, £7.50 concessions, £4.75 with a National Art Pass, £4.00 full-time students and £1.00 on Universal Credit, and free for members, under-18s and carers.
History
Northampton Lodge was 'constructed between 1807 and 1810 by the entrepreneur Henry Leroux of Stoke Newington'. It changed hands several times, 'remaining a private home until 1916', and 'in the post-war period it was turned into an artificial flower factory, which continued to trade on the site until 1968'. The gallery opened in London in 1998 and 'comprises six galleries over three floors'. Eric Estorick (1913-93) was an American sociologist and writer who began collecting seriously after settling in England after the Second World War; the collection holds Boccioni, Carrà, Russolo, Modigliani, de Chirico, Sironi, Morandi, Rosso, Manzù and Marini. Essex Road station is about 360 m away and Highbury & Islington about 440 m.
