Fillmore Street

Attraction · Pacific Heights, California

The shopping street of the ridge, running north-south across it. The blocks between Bush Street and Broadway carry the restaurants, bakeries and clothing shops.

History

The ground was platted as part of the Western Addition in the 1860s and the area acquired the name The Fillmore in the 1880s. Streetcar service on Fillmore began in July 1895, and the following month the Fillmore Counterbalance was installed to work the 24.54 percent grade between Green Street and Broadway; the Street Railway Journal recorded it in June 1896. Decorative arches lined the intersections between 1907 and 1943, when they were taken down and scrapped for the war effort.
