Gramercy Park
Park · Gramercy, New York
A two-acre private park created in 1832 when developer Samuel Ruggles deeded the land to trustees of the surrounding lots; one of only two private parks in New York City, open only to keyholding property owners. Anchors the Gramercy Park Historic District, designated 1966 and listed on the National Register in 1980.
History
Actor Edwin Booth founded The Players club in 1888 at 16 Gramercy Park South, an 1847 mansion redesigned by Stanford White; it is a National Historic Landmark and reportedly the oldest club still in its original clubhouse, though it remains a private members' club rather than a public attraction.
