Hogarth's House

The Grade I listing was made on 11 July 1951 and amended on 21 May 1973 as list entry 1358340, under the register name "HOGARTHS HOUSE WALL AND GATE OF HOGARTHS HOUSE", so the single entry covers the house together with its wall and gate. The house was built between 1713 and 1717 in the corner of an orchard, and its first occupant was the Rev George Andreas Ruperti, pastor of the Savoy Lutheran church. William Hogarth bought it from Ruperti's son in 1749 and used it as his country retreat until his death in 1764; the Hogarths extended it in 1750 and his widow added a single-storey extension in 1769. Hogarth is buried in the churchyard of St Nicholas, Chiswick, about 600 m south-east, and his tomb is separately listed Grade II, NHLE 1260811. The house stands hard against the A4 Great West Road, with the Hogarth Roundabout immediately south of it. Turnham Green Underground station is 1,019 m away, taking the District line all day and the Piccadilly line early and late.
