Hoover Building

The main front block was listed Grade II on 10 October 1980 as NHLE 1079353, and the canteen block is a separate Grade II entry, NHLE 1079361, listed on 7 May 1981. Five further Grade II entries cover the setting rather than the factory: the forecourt piers, gates and railings, NHLE 1079363; the gates and three gate piers at the entry gateway, NHLE 1079360; the gates, four gate piers and railings at the main entrance fronting Western Avenue, NHLE 1079362; the gates and two gate piers at the exit, NHLE 1249789; and two gate piers and railings on the corner of Western Avenue and Rydal Crescent, NHLE 1249807. The factory employed 1,600 people at the outset and the canteen followed in 1938. Tesco bought the site in 1989, demolishing northern sections for a supermarket and refurbishing the main block; IDM Properties acquired it in 2015 and converted the main block into 66 flats in 2017-18.
