Museum · Hanworth, England
Kempton Steam Museum occupies Kempton Park Pumping Station on Snakey Lane, Hanworth, Feltham, TW13 6XH. Its Triple Expansion House with two attached chimneys is listed Grade II as NHLE 1260598, the Lilleshall Engine House separately Grade II as NHLE 1375631, and the site is also a scheduled monument, NHLE 1001977, over 0.235 hectares. It opens March to November on selected days and most Sundays: Steaming Weekends 10.30am to 4pm, and Static Viewing Sundays 11am to 3pm as a free drop-in, most Sundays from March to October.
History
The Grade II* listing of the Triple Expansion House was made on 21 March 1995 as list entry 1260598, the Lilleshall Engine House was listed on 9 July 1998 as list entry 1375631, and the Primary Filter House was listed Grade II on 30 July 2003 as list entry 1390540; the scheduling carries no grade, which belongs to the listing. The museum's triple-expansion steam engine and its identical twin pumped London's drinking water from 1929 to 1980, and the operator says the engine stands as high as four stacked double-decker buses. The engines are close in design and size to those of RMS Titanic and stand in for them in films and documentaries. On Steaming Weekends, guided tours of the static Lady Bessie Prescott Engine number 7 run every 20 minutes from 1.10pm for up to six people at a time; the operator's visit page gives the last tour at 3.30pm and its prices page gives 3.10pm. Self-guided access runs 10.30am to 1pm, last entry 12.30pm, with a maximum of 30 people on the engine, and there is a 1.4 m (4 ft 7 in) minimum height requirement because of the historic railings. The Kempton Great Engines Trust Ltd runs the museum, and the adjacent Hampton & Kempton Waterworks Railway runs on steaming weekends as a separate organisation with its own ticket. Kempton Park station, 599 m away on South Western Railway, is in Spelthorne, Surrey; Feltham, on South Western Railway, is the nearest station inside Hounslow, about 2.5 km north.
