The Mather Homestead
Historic site · Darien, Connecticut
Darien's only National Historic Landmark: an 1778 homestead that stayed in the Mather family for generations. Stephen Tyng Mather, founder and first director of the National Park Service, owned it from 1906 until his death in 1930; the Mather Homestead Foundation was created in 2016 to run it as a museum. Open Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-2 p.m.; Friday-Saturday tours by appointment. Phone (203) 202-7602.
