Middlebury College Snow Bowl
Ski area · Hancock, Vermont
A chairlift-served ski area on Worth Mountain owned and operated by Middlebury College since 1939-40, open to the public alongside its college ski program.
History
The Middlebury College Snow Bowl's first season was 1939-40; its ski trails were cut in the 1930s, possibly in conjunction with Middlebury's first Winter Carnival in 1934, and an original rope tow was installed on Worth Mountain in early 1940, per New England Ski History's Middlebury page. The Snow Bowl is located on Worth Mountain, south of Bread Loaf Mountain, in the town of Hancock, Vermont, and is owned and operated by Middlebury College. In 1954-55 the Snow Bowl installed a new Pomalift. The Worth Mountain Chair, running to the summit, was installed in 1969. A Bailey Falls triple chairlift was added in 1987-88. The Worth Mountain triple chairlift was installed as a replacement lift in 2009-10. For the 2023-24 season, the Sheehan double chairlift was replaced with a SkyTrac quad. Starting in the winter of 2011-12, the Snow Bowl adopted a "boundary-to-boundary" policy opening its full permit area to skiing, which New England Ski History credits with making the area a destination for tree skiing. The Snow Bowl hosted the National Collegiate Ski Championships in March 1961 and the NCAA National Collegiate Skiing Championships again in 1988. Its winter operating hours are Wednesday-Friday 9 a.m.-9 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 9 a.m.-4 p.m., closed Monday and Tuesday except on select holidays, per the Snow Bowl's own website. It runs a Winter Term PE ski program for Middlebury College academic credit, alongside lessons for adults, children ages 3-13, families, and college students. For the 2026-27 ("26/27") season, the Snow Bowl advertises participation in the Indy Pass, letting its own passholders add on access to Indy Pass partner resorts, though as of the resort's own posting, Indy Pass sales for the 26/27 season were off-sale with a waitlist available, per the Snow Bowl's own Season Passes page.
