Monumento a Pietro Metastasio

Historic site · Parione, Italy

The monument to Pietro Metastasio stands in piazza della Chiesa Nuova. The Sovrintendenza Capitolina records that it was promoted by a committee of artists formed in 1873 under Francesco Podesti, director of the Accademia di San Luca, for the centenary of the poet's death; that the competition was held in 1882 and won by the sculptor Emilio Gallori; that it was inaugurated in piazza San Silvestro on 21 April 1886; and that it was moved to piazza della Chiesa Nuova in 1910, during the works along the line of corso Vittorio Emanuele II. The poet's birthplace was at via dei Cappellari 30, and the monument faces the Oratory of the Filippini, where sacred melodramas were performed.

History

No birth year is given for the sculptor: the Sovrintendenza's own page contradicts itself between its header and its body, so this guide publishes neither.
