Mount Sunapee Resort

Mount Sunapee State Park's own description states alpine skiing is available at "Mt. Sunapee Resort, owned by the State of New Hampshire and managed by Vail Resorts Inc." New Hampshire's own lease-and-amendment records for the ski area state that "the original Lease was approved by G&C [Governor and Council] on June 10, 1998," awarded to the Mueller family, known for building Okemo Mountain Resort in Vermont into a major resort, per New England Ski History's Mount Sunapee page. The Muellers' lease-holding company, Triple Peaks LLC, was founded by Tim and Diane Mueller in 2001; besides the Mount Sunapee lease held by the family since 1998, Triple Peaks' portfolio included Okemo (purchased 1982) and Crested Butte (purchased 2004), per NewEnglandSkiIndustry.com. On June 4, 2018, Vail Resorts announced it had acquired Triple Peaks, LLC and Stevens Pass, though the article reporting the announcement stated the deals "are expected to be completed this summer." That same article states that "the State of New Hampshire remains the owner of the land and legacy assets at Mount Sunapee," distinguishing the state's ownership from the operating lease Vail was acquiring. On September 26, 2018, NH Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Commissioner Sarah Stewart issued a decision memo announcing the state's approval of the transfer of the Mount Sunapee lease to Vail Resorts, following "several rounds of due diligence," per NewEnglandSkiIndustry.com. New Hampshire's own lease-document records list a 2018 amendment, "Lease Amendment #A, 2018 - Change of Control," effective through June 30, 2028. Vail Resorts' separate acquisition of Peak Resorts, Inc. was announced July 22, 2019 and completed September 24, 2019, which New England Ski History describes as "making Vail Resorts the largest operator of ski areas in New England"; Peak Resorts' portfolio at that time did not include Mount Sunapee or Okemo.
