The National Gallery is at Trafalgar Square, WC2N 5DN, with its visitor entrance in the Sainsbury Wing, and is listed Grade I as NHLE 1066236. It opens daily 10am to 6pm and until 9pm on Friday, closing 24 to 26 December and 1 January, and general admission is free.
History
The gallery holds the national collection of paintings in the Western European tradition from the 13th to the 19th centuries, over 2,600 works in all, and states that its paintings are on show 361 days a year, free of charge. It has undergone many transformations since its foundation in 1824, and a new Research Centre is opening in 2028. The Sainsbury Wing is a separate Grade I entry, NHLE 1451082. The statue of James II in front of the west wing is Grade I, NHLE 1217629, and the National Portrait Gallery next door is a separate Grade I entry, NHLE 1066285. Charing Cross station is 83 m away, Leicester Square 378 m and Piccadilly Circus 462 m.
