Cisterna della via Colombo

It was found in 1940 under a farmhouse demolished for the cuttings of the via Imperiale, now via Cristoforo Colombo; clearance was finished in 1969 and the structure was conserved and presented in 1991 and 1992. The cistern is circular, of the early 2nd century AD, built in opus reticulatum: a trapezoidal vestibule leads to a vaulted annular corridor divided into ten intercommunicating bays, then to a second undivided concentric corridor and a domed central chamber almost three metres across, the whole lined in signino.
