Gazometro di Roma

The gasworks and the first holders were designed in 1909 for the gas plant Ernesto Nathan wanted for the city. Samuel Cuttler & Sons of London built three smaller holders between 1910 and 1912, two of 25,000 cubic metres and one of 60,000. The great frame was erected by Ansaldo of Genoa with Klonne of Dortmund between 1935 and 1937 for the Societa Anglo-Romana per l'Illuminazione di Roma col Gas: 89.10 metres high, 63 metres in diameter, for a volume of 200,000 cubic metres, on 1,551 piles totalling 36 kilometres. After the plant stopped working the holder bell was removed and only the frame was left standing; of the three smaller holders, one became a gas pressure-reduction plant, one a technical building with a boiler house and stores, and one a multi-storey car park. Eni has owned the site, of more than twelve hectares, since 1967, through Italgas and Snam. The Luxometro lighting work dates from 2006; Eni's Joule school opened in 2020, the ZERO cleantech accelerator from 2021 and the Eni 2050 Lab from 2022, and ROAD, the Rome Advanced District, was inaugurated on 17 May 2023 by Eni, Acea, Autostrade per l'Italia, Bridgestone, Cisco, Gruppo FS and Nextchem. Maker Faire Rome was held here in 2021 and 2022.
