The monastic garden is entered at the Spezieria, Via Ostiense 186. The abbey states that it is normally not accessible to the public and opens it only for booked guided visits in two seasons a year, spring and autumn, for small groups and for a participation fee. Booking is on 06 698 80 811 or giardino@abbaziasanpaolo.org. The garden contains an orto dei semplici growing the officinal plants used in the herbal preparations sold at the Spezieria.
History
The garden belongs to the Benedictine abbey annexed to the basilica. The basilica and its annexed buildings are the property of the Holy See under Article 13 of the Lateran Treaty of 11 February 1929. Article 15 provides that the property, «benche facenti parte del territorio dello Stato italiano» - although forming part of the territory of the Italian State - enjoys the immunities that international law grants to the seats of the diplomatic agents of foreign States. It is on Italian soil and visitors are subject to Italian law.
