Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church

Historic site · Belmont, New York

A church at 627 East 187th Street, an address carried both by Wikipedia's article on it and by the Belmont Business Improvement District's institutions directory. No architect is named on any source this research reached and no landmark designation is stated in either direction. A style, Romanesque Revival, appears in an uncited Wikipedia infobox field with no supporting reference, which is not enough to publish.

History

Wikipedia says the parish was begun early in 1906 by Rev. Daniel Burke, in answer to the petition of the Italians living in the neighborhood of 183rd Street and Pelham Avenue, and was formally established around June 1906 when a store was remodeled as a chapel. Its article on the church gives a 750-seat basement church opened on December 25, 1907, a 500-seat upper church opened on December 8, 1912, and the upper church dedicated in 1917; its article on the neighborhood says the building was constructed in 1906. The two disagree, and neither account is published here as the settled one.
