Material from the Christian communities of the first centuries, on the Vatican Museums itinerary and covered by the Museums ticket. The Museums name the Good Shepherd and Jonah, strigilated sarcophagi, continuous-frieze sarcophagi, the mosaics of Ciriaca, double-register and column sarcophagi, and a Nativity and Epiphany.
History
Pius IX founded the museum in 1854, in the Lateran Palace, to hold evidence of the Christian communities of the first centuries; the collection was later moved into the Vatican Museums.
