Richard Cornell Graveyard
Historic site · Far Rockaway, New York
A New York City individual landmark, designated August 18, 1970, and described by the Landmarks Preservation Commission as one of New York City's surviving 18th-century cemeteries. NYC Parks holds it as the Cornell Burial Ground, on 0.459 acres on the west side of Caffrey Avenue north of New Haven Avenue.
History
Richard Cornell is generally considered the first settler of European descent to homestead in Rockaway. Wikipedia records that in 1685 the band chief Tackapoucha and the English governor of the province agreed to sell the Rockaways to a Captain Palmer for 31 pounds sterling, and that Palmer sold the land on to Cornell in 1687; NYC Parks dates that purchase to August 23, 1687. The property was later partitioned into 46 lots.
