The Roundhouse

It was built in 1846–47 as a goods locomotive shed, designed by Robert B Dockray for the London and North Western Railway and built by Branson & Gwyther (NHLE 1258103). It later served as a warehouse for W & A Gilbey Ltd, and was converted for use as a theatre in 1967 and again in 1985. The engine house was one of two put up in the 1846–48 overhaul of the goods depot; its counterpart for passenger engines, south of the main line, was demolished in 1966 (NHLE 1258100). Two further Grade II entries stand immediately outside: a cattle trough opposite the debouchment of Belmont Street, NHLE 1258104, and a drinking fountain set in the wall next to the Roundhouse, NHLE 1258105. On Gloucester Avenue, the Camden Incline Winding Engine House of 1837 by Robert Stephenson is Grade II* listed, NHLE 1342073: four parallel vaulted underground chambers, each about 35m long, 4.5m wide and 7m high, with a larger transverse vault at the north-west end, about 23m by 9m and 5.5m high, which housed the twin 60 horsepower condensing engines and the 20-foot-diameter drive wheel that hauled trains up the incline from Euston.
