Silver Sands State Park

A shoreline state park with a three-quarter-mile all-weather boardwalk and a natural sandbar (tombolo) connecting the beach to 14-acre Charles Island, a wildlife sanctuary tied to the Captain Kidd buried-treasure legend of 1699. Open daily 8 a.m. to sunset; sandbar crossing to the island is prohibited May 1-Sept 9 for bird-nesting season.
History
Acquired after Hurricane Diane in 1955, becoming Connecticut's fourth shoreline park in 1960.
