Snaresbrook Crown Court is a working Crown Court at 75 Hollybush Hill, E11 1QW, listed Grade II as NHLE 1358004. It runs 20 court rooms, handles about 7,000 cases a year and stands in 18 acres of grounds with its own lake, Eagle Pond, opposite the junction of Hollybush Hill and Wanstead High Street. The building is read from Hollybush Hill; there is no visitor route through it.
History
The Grade II listing was made on 11 November 1968 as list entry 1358004 and amended on 12 December 2019. George Gilbert Scott and William Bonython Moffatt built it in 1841-1843 in Jacobean Gothic for the Infant Orphan Asylum, founded by the philanthropist Andrew Reed. It remained an orphanage until 1938, then the Royal Wanstead School until 1971, and was converted to a Crown Court for £1.6m in 1973, opening as a court on 26 November 1974. It is a third-tier centre and one of twelve serving Greater London. The former gatekeeper's lodge, NHLE 1467326, and the former indoor swimming pool, NHLE 1467344, were both added to the list at Grade II on 3 December 2019, fifty-one years after the main building. Snaresbrook station is about 290 m away.
