History

There has been a church on the site since 938, and the present building dates from the 13th century, with restorations in 1850, 1872 and 1893. A shrine to Our Lady of Willesden existed from the 13th century, was destroyed at the Reformation and was restored at the beginning of the 20th century. The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of Willesden, a separate building, is listed Grade II, NHLE 1064217, on 15 March 1979, and St Matthew's Church, Willesden, built between 1900 and 1906 to designs by W. D. Caroe, stands about 900 m south and is listed Grade II, NHLE 1359020.
