Sugarloaf

Sugarloaf began operations in 1950, per the resort's own "About Us" page, when the Sugarloaf Mountain Ski Club secured land on the mountain's northern face; the first trail, Winter's Way, was completed in 1951, and a rope tow was installed in 1953. Between that founding and a 1994 sale, per New England Ski History, the resort was owned for nearly four decades by the Sugarloaf Mountain Corporation, formed in March 1955 with Robert "Bunny" Bass as president and Amos Winter as executive manager, which built Sugarloaf's early lifts, its 1966 gondola, and a 1974 top-to-bottom snowmaking system, before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on March 23, 1986; Warren Cook then became its president. A majority holding in Sugarloaf was purchased by S-K-I Ltd. on August 24, 1994 for $2 million. S-K-I Ltd. merged with LBO Resort Enterprises Corp. on June 28, 1996, forming American Skiing Company, which shortly afterward acquired the remaining 49% of Sugarloaf stock from Warren Cook, giving American Skiing Company full control. On August 8, 2007, American Skiing Company sold Sugarloaf and Sunday River to Boyne USA Resorts for a combined $77 million; Boyne then sold the underlying real-estate assets to CNL Lifestyle Properties while retaining an operating lease. In 2016, per Wikipedia's "Boyne Resorts" article, CNL Income Properties sold all six of the ski resorts it leased to Boyne — including Sugarloaf — to Och-Ziff Capital Management, with Boyne continuing to operate under lease. That purchase-from-Och-Ziff was announced in March 2018, but per New England Ski History's own Sugarloaf page, it was in May 2018 that "Boyne USA Resorts acquired the assets of Sugarloaf, putting operational control and ownership under one company."
