Sunday River

Before Les Otten, per New England Ski History, Sunday River was founded by the Bethel Area Development Corporation, formed in February 1958, which created the Sunday River Skiway Corporation — formed May 7, 1958, with Governor Edmund Muskie among its first stockholders — to build and operate the ski area on Barker/Bald Mountain. By 1972, the ski area "was taken over by Killington's parent company," under which Les Otten was named general manager in 1973, before he personally acquired full ownership of the ski area in 1980 and subsequently expanded snowmaking and trails. Otten formed LBO Resort Enterprises in 1994, which acquired Attitash (NH) and Sugarbush (VT) that same year and Cranmore (NH) in 1995. In 1996, LBO Resort Enterprises merged with S-K-I Ltd. to form American Skiing Company, bringing Sunday River and rival Sugarloaf under the same ownership. On August 8, 2007, American Skiing Company sold Sunday River and Sugarloaf to Boyne USA Resorts for a combined $77 million; Boyne then sold the underlying real-estate assets to CNL Lifestyle Properties (via CNL Income Properties) while retaining an operating lease. In 2016, per Wikipedia's "Boyne Resorts" article, CNL Income Properties sold all six of the ski resorts it leased to Boyne — including Sunday River — to Och-Ziff Capital Management, with Boyne continuing to operate under lease. That purchase-from-Och-Ziff was announced in March 2018, but per New England Ski History's coverage of the same multi-resort transaction, it was in May 2018 that Boyne completed the acquisition. Newry, Maine — Oxford County, 2020 census population 411, per Wikipedia's "Newry, Maine" article — is the town containing Sunday River, whose resort address is 15 South Ridge Road, Newry, Maine 04261.
