Sutton House is a National Trust property at 2 and 4 Homerton High Street. It is Grade II* listed, NHLE 1226810, listed on 24 April 1951, and the gate and piers are separately Grade II, NHLE 1226767. Opening comes as a per-date calendar rather than fixed weekly hours, so no weekly hours are given here. Interiors on show include the Linenfold Parlour, the Great Chamber, the Georgian Parlour, a Tudor kitchen and a recreated squatters' room from the 1980s occupation.
History
The house was built in 1535 by Sir Ralph Sadler as his family home and was first known as Bryck Place; Sadler was Principal Secretary of State to Henry VIII. The National Trust bought it in the 1930s with the proceeds of a bequest from William Alexander Robertson, made in memory of his two brothers killed in the First World War. The linenfold panelling was stolen in the 1980s while the building stood derelict and was returned to the National Trust by the salvage firm that recognised its quality. Restoration was completed in 1993 and the house fully opened to the public in 1994.
