Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge

Attraction · Bay Ridge, New York

The suspension bridge linking Bay Ridge to Staten Island, opened on November 21, 1964. It is best treated as something to look at rather than a site to visit.

History

Othmar Ammann, Leopold Just and colleagues at Ammann & Whitney designed it. Construction ran from August 1959 to November 1964 at a cost of $320 million. The Brooklyn approach displaced roughly 7,500 Bay Ridge residents and required the demolition of the island fortification Fort Lafayette; residents had lobbied unsuccessfully for a Belt Parkway approach instead of the Seventh Avenue route the Board of Estimate approved in December 1958.
