Veterans Building

Historic site · Hayes Valley, California

The twin of the Opera House across the War Memorial court, holding the Herbst Theatre and, on its fourth floor, the Wilsey Center. It shares San Francisco Landmark No. 84, designated in 1977, with the War Memorial Opera House on one parcel, and is owned and operated by the City and County of San Francisco.

History

Its cornerstone was laid on 11 November 1931 and the building opened on 11 November 1932, to Arthur Brown, Jr.'s design. The United Nations Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 on the stage of the Veterans Auditorium here, now the Herbst Theatre. The fourth floor was rebuilt as the Wilsey Center and opened in 2015.
