Taconic Golf Club: Golf in Williamstown, Massachusetts

Taconic Golf Club is at 19 Meacham Street, Williamstown, MA 01267; the clubhouse stands on the corner of Water and Meacham Streets in the centre of the town, one turn off Spring Street. Water Street is MA 43, Main Street through Williamstown is MA 2, and US 7 carries south out of town toward South Williamstown, where Waubeeka Golf Links sits at 137 New Ashford Road. Between the two courses the road distance is 4.6 miles, by Meacham Street, Water Street and Green River Road (both MA 43) and New Ashford Road (US 7). The Vermont line runs along Williamstown's northern boundary and the New York line lies to its west. The airport is Albany International (ALB), in Albany County, New York, 39.9 road miles from Taconic's clubhouse and 38.7 road miles from Waubeeka. The route runs Meacham Street, Water Street (MA 43), Main Street and the Taconic Trail (MA 2), NY 2, NY 278, Hoosick Road and Hoosick Street (NY 7), I-787 and the Collar City Bridge, then Wade Road, Old Niskayuna Road Extension and Sicker Road. That 39.9-mile figure ends on Sicker Road, a road on the airport's north side rather than the passenger-terminal kerb; routing instead to the terminal frontage, by I-87 and NY 155, gives 41.66 miles, so the number should not be read as more precise than it is. Golf Digest's own entry for the course describes it as "located in a quiet village in the northwest corner of Massachusetts, closer to Albany than Boston." Neither operator publishes a parking arrangement on any page read for this guide, so none is claimed here.

The club's own history page, compiled by John English, Williams class of 1932 and a former USGA official, begins in 1896, when "three men with three tomato cans gave birth to the Taconic Golf Club" — William Howard Doughty, James M. Ide and Edward C. Gale, who had permission from Williams College to sink three cans on Weston Athletic Field, "which adjoins the present 18th fairway of Taconic." Gale paid Henry N. Sabin $55 on Sept. 5, 1896 to start the club; dues were $20 a year. A seven-hole course followed the same year, and of those holes the club writes: "One of those holes, the present 17th, is the oldest at Taconic and perhaps as old as any in the country." A nine-hole course came in 1897 on Doughty land, with the Whitney Sampson house on South Street serving as clubhouse until 1955.

The eighteen holes are a product of 1927. George Alfred Cluett, Williams 1896, assembled the ground — a gift of roughly 47 acres from Mrs Doughty, a 45-acre farm from John H. Dennison, and the 17-acre Dillon lot bought by the Williams College Trustees — and, in the club's words, "Wayne Stiles of Stiles & Van Kleek, a Boston firm, was commissioned to design and construct an 18 hole course in 1927." Construction began in August 1927 under Richard "Dick" Baxter, the club professional and greenkeeper hired in 1924, and was "completed by Labor Day in 1928. It was a par 73 layout." The tree-lined fairways are Baxter's; the land had been "essentially open farmland with very few trees." In 1955 the course was revised to 6,640 yards off the back tees and par 71, when the clubhouse moved to its present Meacham Street site. The club's account of the modern work reads: "In 2008 renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse of Hanse Golf Course Design Inc. was retained for a multi-million dollar renovation project, which was completed in the summer of 2009." Golf Digest's architects field records the credit as "Wayne E. Stiles, ASGCA / John Van Kleek / (R) Gil Hanse" with an opening date of 1896, and its entry text describes Hanse as "making restorative modifications here since 2008" — a continuing programme rather than a single finished project. Both accounts are given because they sit slightly differently.

The operator's own course details give eighteen holes, par 71, and four tee sets: Black 6,808 yards, Gold 6,410, Purple 5,826, White 5,143, with a Black-tee rating of 73.5 and a slope of 134. Golf Digest publishes 6,802 yards and a slope of 136 for the same course; the operator's figures are the ones used here. Golf Digest describes the layout as "a challenging parkland layout with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains … designed and built in the 1920s by the architecture team of Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek with undisturbed holes that fan out across a wooded property."

Three Golf Digest placings were checked against the lists themselves. Taconic is 13th on the 2025-'26 Best Golf Courses in Massachusetts. It is 78th on America's 100 Greatest Public Courses, where its own block records a previous rank of 85. And it is 2nd on The 25 Greatest College Golf Courses in America, Golf Digest's 2023 list, behind Yale Golf Course and ahead of the University of Michigan Golf Course. That college placing is Golf Digest's, and the club states it correctly on its own course-details page as "#2 ranked College Course in the country by Golf Digest"; a different page of the same site attributes it to another publication, and this guide does not repeat that attribution. One further claim is recorded rather than asserted: Golf Digest's entry text says three USGA championships have been played here — the 1956 U.S. Junior Amateur, the 1963 U.S. Women's Amateur and the 1996 U.S. Senior Amateur — in a single piece of copy reused on two of its own pages, while the club's detailed history page names no championship at all. That is one source, not two, and this guide leaves it as Golf Digest's claim.

The access claim here rests on the operator's own words, not on a ranking's label. Taconic's home page carries the sentence "The golf course and the restaurant are open to the public," and the club's rate table opens with a line item priced for a player with no membership and no member host at all: "Unaccompanied Guest Without Cart (first round)." That is the traveller's category in the club's own vocabulary, and it is the highest-priced line on the table, above every Williams-affiliated category. Eleven pages of the site were read in full and searched for a members-only rule, a member-accompaniment requirement, a reciprocal-club condition or any student, faculty or alumni priority on course access. There is none. The only affiliation-conditioned facility on the property is the separate Practice Center at Cole Field, and the club opens that to visitors too: "Use of the practice center is free to all Taconic members. Guests, visiting alumni and the general public pay a daily fee of $10.00 (all the balls you can hit)." Under the heading "2026 Range Hours of Operation" the club states that the driving range opens on Tuesday, May 26th, and lists its hours as closed Monday and Thursday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM Saturday and Sunday. Corroboration for public access comes from outside the club as well: Golf Digest's own course page gives the access type as Public, and a course cannot sit at 78th on a ranking of America's 100 Greatest Public Courses and be member-only.

No green fee is published in this guide, and the reason is the rule rather than a gap. Taconic's rate table is headed only "Green Fees / Regular Rates / Price" and carries no date of any kind. The only four-digit year in its visible text is the site-wide footer copyright, and that footer is provably a rolling one: archived copies of the same page from 8 September 2025 and 9 December 2025 show the identical table with the identical prices under a footer reading 2025, while the live page reads 2026. The year moved and the table did not, which dates the website and not the rates. The club does date headings elsewhere on the same site — the practice-centre page is headed "2026 Range Hours of Operation" — so the absence on the rate page is a real editorial absence rather than a missed read. There is also no online booking engine to test, so no figure could be confirmed by executing a booking. Two third-party sources quote $200; neither is the operator and neither is dated, and one of them describes its own number as an estimate. This guide therefore prints no green fee for Taconic. Ask the Pro Shop.

That is also how a visitor books. Taconic runs no public tee-time engine: the site's "Tee Times & Statements" link resolves to a username-and-password member portal, and the only external commerce link on the whole site sells merchandise. The published route for a visitor is the Pro Shop, (413) 458-3997.

Massachusetts golf has a real season, and this club publishes both ends of it on its own events calendar. The entry for Wednesday, April 15, 2026 reads "Course Opens for the Season," tagged by the club under Golf Events, with hours of 08:00am to 05:00pm. The entry for Sunday, November 15, 2026 reads "The Golf Course, Pro Shop and Restaurant Closes for the Season," tagged under Important Dates. The playing season is therefore 15 April 2026 to 15 November 2026.

The same calendar names the dates a visitor most wants to avoid. Greens aeration is scheduled for Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 August 2026. The clubhouse and restaurant are listed as closed on 2, 3, 10, 14 and 17 October 2026. And the calendar carries roughly fifty dated 2026 items, of which the tournaments that occupy the course are: the Mass Golf Women's Spring Cup on 23 April; the Williams College Student/Faculty/Staff Tournament on 28 April; the Women's NESCAC Championship, 1 to 3 May; the Men's and Women's Spring 1-Day Member Guest on 15 May; Williams College Reunions, 11 to 14 June; the 72nd Annual Men's Member Guest, 26 to 27 June; the Senior Club Championships, 11 to 12 July; the 64th Williams College Alumni Guest, 24 to 26 July; the 62nd Annual Women's Invitational, 3 to 5 August; the Club Championship, 14 to 16 August; the Baxter Member/Member Tournament, 12 to 13 September; the Williams Men's Fall Invitational, 19 to 20 September; the Williams Women's Fall Invitational, 26 to 27 September; the Taconic Men's Open 4-Ball Classic on 5 October; the Rudy Goff Mixed Open Scotch on 18 October; and Twiggy's Scramble on 25 October. The club's own structured data adds the general caveat that "course hours and practice facilities vary seasonally."

The weekend happens in Williamstown itself. Neither course has rooms, and the town carries a college, a theatre festival and two art museums, so the basecamp is the town rather than a resort.

The Williams Inn, 101 Spring Street, reservations 413-458-9371, is 0.5 road miles from the Taconic clubhouse by Meacham Street, Water Street (MA 43), Latham Street and Spring Street, and 4.9 road miles from Waubeeka. It is a three-storey inn of "64 well-appointed guest rooms with a contemporary design reflective of the architecture of local area farmhouses," built with energy-saving features the inn says "reduce energy consumption by more than 40 percent." It has a fitness centre, meeting and event space "that can accommodate up to 390 guests" with what it calls a transitional inside-outside area, and an on-site signature restaurant, The Barn, "offering seasonal locally sourced cuisine and a craft bar." Accessible rooms are itemised — the King Junior Accessible Suite is described as "an oversized room offering 470 square feet" with a tub with grab bars and a transfer chair. The inn is trading: its booking link answers on a live reservation engine titled for the property.

Mezze Guesthouse, 777 Cold Spring Road, is 2.6 road miles from Taconic by Meacham Street, Water Street (MA 43), Main Street (MA 2) and Cold Spring Road (MA 2 / US 7). It is "five thoughtfully designed suites above one of the Berkshires' most celebrated restaurants," ranging "from intimate queen rooms to spacious suites designed for couples, families, and small groups," bookable singly or as a full-floor buyout, and its own summary of itself is "Stay Upstairs. Dine Downstairs." The operator states plainly: "Due to the building's historic nature, none of our rooms are wheelchair-accessible."

The town's other well-known hotel is not listed here. The Orchards Hotel's own domain answers with a placeholder whose entire visible content is a "Launching Soon" notice and a copyright line reading 2024 — no rooms, no rate, no booking path and no telephone number — and archived copies show that same placeholder unchanged from January 2025 through a reading on 6 September 2026. The property was not established as trading, so this guide does not publish it.

For dinner, Mezze Bistro + Bar at 777 Cold Spring Road, 413-458-0123, was "established in 1996 as a gathering place with a contemporary and ingredient-driven menu" serving "honest food inspired by the vast flavors of the Mediterranean," pairing "small-batch microbrews, locally distilled spirits, and seasonal, small-production wines with the finest of independently grown, fresh organic ingredients." It is the founding restaurant of Mezze Hospitality Group, itself founded in 1996; Bo Peabody and Nancy Thomas are the co-founders, Kevin Orcutt is the chef, and private dining is in the Green Room, which the restaurant says can "seat up to 25 people." A live reservation widget takes party size, date and time on the page.

The Taconic clubhouse restaurant is the other obvious table, and it is not a members' dining room: "The full service restaurant is open to the public and serves lunch and dinner during the golf season. Dine on our terraces overlooking the great Taconic golf course and enjoy one of the best vistas in Berkshire County." The clubhouse was established in 1955 and stands on the corner of Water and Meacham Streets in the centre of Williamstown. Sandy Smith is the executive chef; the restaurant number is 413-458-5211. The club states its hours two ways and this guide records both: its visible pages say the restaurant is open seven days a week from 11:30am to 8:00pm, while its own structured data says "clubhouse dining is open daily from 11:30 AM to 7:30 PM." Neither is preferred here. Note that the club's calendar closes the clubhouse and restaurant on 2, 3, 10, 14 and 17 October 2026, and for the season on 15 November 2026.

The third table is Rhodes' Tavern, on the Waubeeka property at 137 New Ashford Road, reservations 413-458-6000, named for Samuel Rhodes, who bought the South Williamstown farms the course occupies in December 1875 and December 1883. Its published hours are 11:00am to 8:00pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and 11:00am to 4:00pm Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday — with the operator's own condition attached: "Weather, course play and tournament play permitting."

The second course is Waubeeka Golf Links, 137 New Ashford Road, Williamstown, 413.458.8355 — the nearest other golf course to Taconic by road, at 4.6 miles, and in the same town and the same county. It is not on Golf Digest's Massachusetts ranking; it is here because it is the nearest playable course, and the ordering is safe on geometry alone: the next golf course after Waubeeka is 7.04 miles from Taconic in a straight line, and a road distance cannot be shorter than a straight line. A source independent of any map data reaches the same answer, listing two golf courses in Williamstown, both public, and nothing else inside 7 miles.

A non-member can book it, and that was established by executing the booking system rather than by reading a claim. Waubeeka's tee times run through a Lightspeed/ChronoGolf marketplace record — club 7453, course 8503, "Waubeeka Golf Links, 18 holes" — whose public player type is named, in the engine's own text, "Public - Standard." Queried across the dates 6 to 13 September 2026, the engine returned dated, priced, bookable 9-hole and 18-hole slots on seven of those eight days. The engine also states its own booking window in its own words: the Public - Standard player type "can only book 7 days in advance." Saturday 12 September 2026 returned no slots at all for either 9 or 18 holes while the days on either side of it returned plenty, and no cause for that is published anywhere on the operator's site, calendar or maintenance page — so this guide records the gap without explaining it.

The course is eighteen holes with an on-site driving range of four practice tees. The published rate table carries no year and no dated qualifier of any kind, so no green fee is printed for Waubeeka either; the rates are on the operator's site and the engine quotes a price with every slot. The credit for the design belongs to Rowland Armacost, with an opening date of 1966, on the authority of a third-party course directory — the operator names no architect on any of its own pages, and publishes neither a par nor a yardage, so none is given here. Ownership is recent and local: "Samuel's two great-great grandsons, Chris and Peter Kapiloff along with Steven Nielsen purchased the course in December of 2023 as equal owners." Greens aeration at Waubeeka was completed on Monday, August 31 and Wednesday, September 2. Work listed under the operator's current maintenance projects — woodchips moved from behind the 15th tee toward the pines at the 12th and 13th, a pergola area being built and levelled, poor cart-path sections dug up and replaced, and flower beds re-mulched and weeded — closes nothing.
