Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore
Historic site · Monti, Italy
One of the four papal basilicas of Rome, per Roma Capitale. Its block sits on the seam between Monti and Esquilino: the postcode is 00184 on the facade side and 00185 at Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore 28.
History
Roma Capitale's material on Santa Maria Maggiore is internally inconsistent. Its Rione I – Monti page names the basilica among the monuments present in the rione; the same page states that the Esquiline hill no longer forms part of the rione, and its page for the basilica places the basilica on the summit of the Esquiline hill. The rione assignment is unresolved. The basilica is written up once, here, rather than in two rioni.
Under the Lateran Treaty of 11 February 1929, Italy recognises the Holy See's full ownership of this property (Art. 13; Annex II). Art. 15 states that the property, «benché facenti parte del territorio dello Stato italiano» — although forming part of the territory of the Italian State — enjoys the immunities that international law grants to the headquarters of the diplomatic agents of foreign States. It is on Italian soil and visitors are subject to Italian law. Art. 13 names the basilica explicitly, and Annex II, Tav. 2 names the «Basilica di S. Maria Maggiore con gli edifici annessi».
Roma Capitale records the commemoration of the snow miracle on 5 August; the two great chapels, the Sistina and the Paolina, raised by Sixtus V and Paul V between the late sixteenth and the early seventeenth century; and nave mosaics of the fifth century.
No source states its opening hours, so none are given here.
