Bentley Priory Museum

Sir John Soane designed a new house north of the original priory in 1775 for James Duberley, an Army contractor. It was sold in 1788 to John Hamilton, who succeeded as Earl of Abercorn in 1789, was created Marquess in 1790, and only then made extensive alterations to the house and park. It was the final home of the Dowager Queen Adelaide, queen consort of William IV, before her death there in 1849, and it later served as a hotel and a girls' school before the Royal Air Force acquired it in 1926. In the Second World War it was the headquarters of RAF Fighter Command, and it remained in RAF hands in various roles until 2008; the Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust secured part of the building as a museum and memorial to those who served. The Grade II* listing was made on 25 May 1983 as list entry 1358638. Stanmore station, the Jubilee line terminus, is 2,166 m away and is the nearest rail access of any mode.
