Beth Olam Cemetery

A Jewish cemetery founded in 1851 by three Manhattan congregations. Its 1882 Metaher house and gates were designed by Calvert Vaux and include Tiffany stained glass and LaFarge bronze doors. Benjamin Cardozo, Emma Lazarus and the chess champion Emanuel Lasker are buried here.

History

Founded by Shearith Israel, B'nai Jeshurun and Temple Shaaray Tefila. The Metaher house and gates are the only religious building Calvert Vaux, co-designer of Central Park, is known to have designed. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 16, 2016.
