Cypress Hills Cemetery

A non-sectarian rural cemetery dedicated on November 21, 1848, covering 225 acres split by the Jackie Robinson Parkway. More than 400,000 interments include Jackie Robinson, Mae West, Piet Mondrian, James J. Corbett and Eubie Blake. It is active and open to visitors.
History
Chartered by New York State on April 27, 1847 and dedicated the following year, it was one of the first non-sectarian cemetery corporations organized in New York City. Its founders chose an elevated, wooded hilltop site over cheaper lowland for seclusion, privacy and pensive tranquility. Two chapels stand on the grounds: the Cypress Hills Abbey of 1926 and the Memorial Abbey of 1936.
