Bromley and Sheppard's Colleges

The almshouses were founded under the 1666 will of John Warner, Bishop of Rochester, to house twenty poor widows of orthodox and loyal clergymen, and were built between 1670 and 1672. Bromley College now contains 40 self-contained dwellings. Sheppard's College was added in 1840 by Mrs Sheppard for daughters who had lived with their mothers in the main college and holds a further seven dwellings. The foundation is a registered charity, number 210337, and still houses retired Church of England clergy and their dependants, with preference to the Diocese of Rochester. A K2 telephone kiosk at the junction with College Slip is listed Grade II, NHLE 1186822.
