Camden Market

The market occupies the Camden Goods Depot, built from 1837 as the London terminus for goods traffic on the London and Birmingham Railway. Robert Stephenson chose the 25-acre site north of the canal, bought from Lord Southampton in January 1837, because it let freight interconnect with the London docks by way of the Regent's Canal of 1812–20; the depot opened to traffic in 1839 (NHLE 1113238). The Interchange, Grade II listed, NHLE 1113238, is a four-storey warehouse built directly over the canal basin, its ground floor carried on a line of octagonal steel columns down the centre of the basin, with 24 window bays to the long east and west elevations. The Horse Hospital, Grade II* listed, NHLE 1258100, is of two phases: the western range of 1882–83 held 92 horses over two storeys and the eastern range of 1897 a further 40. The Stanley Sidings stables are Grade II listed, NHLE 1258101. The original depot included 18 coke ovens for making smokeless locomotive fuel and stabling for 50 horses.
