Arco di Dolabella e Silano (Porta Caelimontana)

A gate of the Servian Walls, rebuilt by Augustus and identified with the Porta Caelimontana, later used to carry Nero's aqueduct across the street. Roma Capitale gives it as 4 metres in width and 6.56 metres in height, with part of it now below ground, and records the monument under Rione XIX - Celio.

History

Roma Capitale records that the arch was built at the start of the first century AD by the consuls Dolabella and Silanus, per the inscription on the attic: P. CORNELIS P. F. DOLABELLA C. IUNIUS C. F. SILANUS FLAMEN MARTIAL(is) CO(n)S(ules) EX S(enatus) C(onsulto) FACIUNDUM CURAVERUNT IDEMQUE PROBAVER(unt). It was rebuilt with travertine blocks over the original tufa blocks, which are still visible in the right-hand wall. Tradition places John of Matha in the room above it from 1209 until his death in 1213. Roma Capitale records that the Caelian was anciently called Mons Querquetulanus, because it was covered in oaks.
