The Charles Dickens Museum occupies 48-49 Doughty Street and opens Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, with last entry at 4pm. It is ticketed. The house is a terrace of about 1807–09 in darkened stock brick with a slate mansard roof, of three storeys plus attic and basement, and it is Grade I listed, NHLE 1356735.
History
Dickens lived here between 1837 and 1839, and the Historic England entry states that the house 'is listed Grade I for this reason' — the grade rests on the historic association rather than on the architecture (NHLE 1356735). The entry was formerly part of the group 'Nos.39-62 (Consecutive) Doughty Street' before being separated out. The house keeps its original lead rainwater head and pipe and the attached cast-iron railings with urn finials to the areas.
