The Foundling Museum

The present building is a detached Neo-Georgian office block of about 1937 by J M Shepherd for the Thomas Coram Foundation, in brown brick with a hipped pantile roof; a central stone plaque at second-floor level is inscribed 'RFTHG 1937' (NHLE 1272392). The doorway carries a scrolled pediment with a central bust of Coram, flanked at first-floor level by roundels of putti heads carved in low relief. The collection includes 'Moses Brought Before Pharaoh's Daughter', which the operator records Hogarth presenting to the Hospital on 1 April 1747. The site of the original Foundling Hospital is now Coram's Fields, next door: the playground with its gates and railings is Grade II listed, NHLE 1271627, with the forecourt gates and railings listed separately east, NHLE 1271632, and west, NHLE 1378645. The statue of Thomas Coram outside No 40 is Grade II listed, NHLE 1272393.
