Chessington World of Adventures Resort

Amusement park · Chessington, England

Chessington World of Adventures Resort, Leatherhead Road, KT9 2NE, covers 128 acres (52 hectares) and holds over 40 rides, a zoo of more than 1,000 animals, a Sea Life centre, two on-site hotels and a spa. The theme park operates February to December, with the fullest offering March to November, while the zoo and the hotels open year round. Chessington South, on South Western Railway, is the station for it.

History

The site opened as a zoo in 1931 and reopened as a theme park on 7 July 1987. Merlin Entertainments owns it, acquired through the merger with the Tussauds Group in 2007, and the park received about 1.5 million visitors in 2022. Burnt Stub, the mansion at the heart of the site, predates the park and now houses a park attraction. A milestone west of the road beside the car park is listed Grade II, NHLE 1080072. There is no direct rail service between Kingston town centre and Chessington: the Kingston loop and the Chessington branch are different lines out of Waterloo, and the 465 bus is the direct link.
